I have a 9.9 Evinrude Sailmaster on my 84 C-25. When starting on both fully charged batteries it cranks slow for a couple of seconds before starting. The engine runs fine when in use. Also can not get it to lock down in reverse and comes out of the water if powered up. Any assistance would be appreciated.
I have the same motor on the same vintage Catalina 25. Not trying to state the obvious here, but on the left side of the motor (from the cockpit-the same side as the shifter) there is a little black tipped lever that locks the motor down. In the down position, the motor is locked down. I pull the motor up on the bracket, then release that little lever, pulling it forward, to tip the motor completely out of the water. To put it back down, do just the opposite. If you are already doing this, perhaps the lever mechanism is broken, and doesn't lock the motor down as it should. I had this problem on a previous boat.
John, Check all of your electrical connections from the battery to the motor and possibly under the cowling for looseness. If everything is tight then you might need to take apart all connections and give them a good cleaning. Sometimes corrosion can make the contacting points not contact completely. This can also effect your charging ability when the motor is running. Hope this helps.
