<br />Actually, Steve, his question was hypothetical, and asked for our preferences. That's what we gave him. You're saying we shouldn't have?

When someone asks a question, we each give the best answer we can, within the limits of our knowledge and experience. Inevitably, our answers are also influenced by our own preferences. The person who asked the question sorts through all our answers and uses his own judgment and tries some things on his own, and eventually reaches his own conclusions. You made your contributions to that process and so did I. As far as I can tell, Greg got a lot of good "food for thought," which is, I think, what he was asking for.

Steve, The reason that we sail on main alone before the start of a race is, basically, not to save the racing jib, but for much better visibilty in all the traffic before the start. It also saves wear & tear on the crew when we tack!. Once the sequence starts that jib is hoisted to give us the speed that we need.

Derek,
I'm not a racer but was thinking the same thing. When you've got a bunch of boats piled up at the start line you want to be able to see and you also want to be doing as little as possible beside setting your boat up for the best possible Position and correctly timed line passover, raising the headsail once that's accomplished.
Again, not a racer but what an education I'm getting! Thanks everyone for their in depth viewpoints.

Guys,

Thanks alot. I got the information I needed.

Two take aways. One I will be looking for a 135 Genoa and the second I will keep experimenting with the knowledge I have gained through this forum.

Thanks again.
Greg
