Hi Jim, I go to the SA site from time to time and I find them to be, for the most part, the most surly and sinical (sp) bunch of typist/sailers on the web. It does make for some good reading from time to time. Cheers.
I don't think Jim has a Capri. Be a shame to see that mast go to waste, there are no more available, at least according to Catalina and Catalina Direct.
SA - has the persona of a 23 year old bow man on a Farr 40; young dumb and full of....One big Rooster fight, if you will. Many of these guys are really really good at what they do in sailing, some are actually professionals. A lot of the rest are wannabes. I think the formula would be something like When anonymity meets competition the one upsmanship approaches infinity.
Every once in a while you get a story that really really makes the reading over there worth while - like the one about CS's dad and MR. Bill's Dog.

just as an FYI to this post - Jim B directed the poster over here. He doesn't have a capri.
Chris is correct. I originated the post on SA. I have to make a decision as to whether to buy the boat back from the insurance company or let her go. The damage she sustained being blown off her jack stands will require 40-45 hours of labor to repair. This exceeds her insured value and it is not work I am capable of doing myself. I thought maybe some good might be able to come of the situation if she could be parted out. This of course has to weighed against the cost of buying her back from the insurance company and the time/work involved.
I have not gotten the final number from BoatUS as they have to obtain 3 quotes from salvage companies before they will inform me of what I can buy her back for.
All that was asked on SA was if it was worth doing it. I thought it more likely there were more folks on SA who might have experience and/or knowledge at this sort of thing.
Nothing was offered for sale in the SA post. Naturally, if I proceed to part her out, I will be posting here and in the Yahoo group.
Any other suggestions or advice would be appreciated. I am trying to approach this in a practical matter, but the truth is, my heart is broken by this unfortunate turn of events.
I would think that the salvage yards will pay the insurance company a small percentage less than they think they can get out of it when THEY part it out. It's unlikely that you'd get more than they would when you sell the parts so, you will pay the cost of the parts AND still have to do the work to remove and sell them. What's your time and effort worth? Then, you will still have to pay to get rid of the carcass. I'd let it go, take the insurance money and find another.
Rick, I am so sorry that this happened to Swimmer, I know that you had just gotten her moved to Casco Bay last year. As for parting out the boat, I would guess it's like when I bought our Capri 25. I paid the difference that the insurance wanted for the boat 1500. The PO had the cushions in his garage back from Catalina and I picked them up for 700.
I am wondering what goes with the boat? are the sails on her, Cushions, halyards, the new porta pottie? lifejackets, extra rigging, ect. I know that you have done allot to Swimmer, how bad is she? is the hull crushed?
I know that the situation sucks, I do think that you could get some good money for parting her out. I think that it might take a year to sell everything, and you would need to get rid of the hull/
mast boom rudder pulpits sails winches blocks cars halyards porta pottie hatch boards forward hatch new windows t-track sink teak ect........
is your time worth it? I would just take the stuff off the boat that I could, and go find another one...... So will you buy another Capri 25?
What a nightmare, my heart goes out to you. I do not know what I would do in a similar situation, other than be really cranky this summer. It may seem impossible to do now, but I would try to look past this and see the opportunities ahead. Let me know if there is anything I can do.
