It's my first spring with my Catalina and prior to the in water winter storage in CT, the diesel engine was winterized by my marina. How do I commission the winterized diesel engine for the upcoming season? As a true beginner when it comes to diesels, is this something I can do myself? If not, what does it typically cost to have done by a marina so I am not taken advantage of?
Assuming you have the Universal M12 engine that has an heat exchanger, "Winterizing" the engine involves running RV antifreeze through the raw water part of the cooling system so that raw water doesn't remain in it over the winter and it doesn't freeze. The fresh water side on mine remains filled with 50/50 premixed antifreeze over the winter so I just make sure it is topped off prior to start. Check the raw water impeller to make sure it is serviceable. By the way, the heat exchanger has a zinc that you should ask whether the crew that winterized it in the fall had a look at it. Change the oil filter, change the oil and change the fuel filter and you should be good to go. Engine will need to be primed to start after change of fuel filter. Check you hoses and your hoseclamps. It sound like a lot but it really isn't. I remove the wood panels that enclose the engine to do all this because it makes things much easier.
Lots of good advice, although I prefer to change the oil and filters at the end of the season rather than the at the start of the season. That way new oil sits in the engine all winter, not old oil.
