Anyone have suggestions on how to gain enough clearance to apply ablative paint to the bottom while still on the trailer? I have a swing keel and bunks.

Brace the stern and bow with 4x4 framework - either the whole boat or one side at a time. Lower bunks - both of individually, and paint.

I would suggest doing this on hardstand in case the frame should sink from the weight of the boat. the bunks may not reposition properly when you raise them again.

Scott;

I did the same thing last year. I braced the stern with a 4x4 and a hydraulic jack (like Al suggests above)for stability, and lowered each bunk, one-at-a-time, and painted under it. I marked each bunk at the adjustment before lowering it and returned it to that location when finished. Worked great.

Good luck, and be careful

Scott,

I do my C-25 bottom work on a roller bunk trailer, so I haven't tried separating the boat from the support of the trailer much at all. However, on a previous swing keel boat (22', 2,000#) I jacked up against the swing keel, and encouraged the boat to tilt to one side. Once I had painting clearance on one side, I blocked the hull at the bunk supports above the trailer frame crossmembers. It would probably be a good idea to pad any such blocking to prevent damaging the hull by flexing it at the blocking. Maybe a square foot or more of at least 3/4" plywood, and a stack of carpet scraps or flat block of styrofoam. If you find you need to lower the hull back onto the bunks while the bottom paint is still soft, you can put waxpaper over the bunks to protect the fresh paint. (Be sure to try and recover the waxpaper when the boat next comes off the trailer. But if that's not possible, waxpaper is much less environmentally harmfull than plastic would be.)
