Does anyone know what the shroud tension be on 78 catalina

This is an issue that ends up as personal style. Most agree that loose is fast but I sail where the wind is high and am not comfortable with loose leeward shrouds. The real art to the whole thing it setting your stick where you want it in the first place and then run the tension that you like. Are you any good at setting the column and rake of the mast? Make certain your mast is straight athwart ship using your uppers. Set your rake using your for and aft stays. Set any prebend with the lower forwards, then harden the lower afts. What tension you use really is up to you, how you measure it is also up to you, I use a Loos.

P.S. On a 78 you should have a serious look at your rigging, if it has never been replaced then you probably should replace it.

Does your boat have a fixed or adjustable backstay?

A loose rig is only fast when sailing off the wind. When sailing to windward, the rig should always be tensioned firmly. The adjustable backstay lets you change the tension of the rig from loose to firm while underway.

Most Catalina manuals come with pretty good rigging setup instructions. I've followed those for 25 years, all without a tension gage. The major trick is setting the shrouds so the leeward ones don't flop around when you are hard on the wind. Most recommend to NOT turn the turnbuckles when the boat is in the slip after basic tensioning is done, but make sure the threads on the turnbuckles are clean and tighten the leeward shrouds when they are not under load when you are actually sailing.

Stu is right. Don't use the turnbuckles when the rig is under tension.
