Has anyone replaced their anchor light with an LED bulb? This would be a replacement bulb only, not a new housing. If yes, can you tell me where you purchased it?

not sure about that - do they sell the bulb that has contacts on either end? In order for the anchor light to be legal - it needs to be visible 360, and some of the bulbs I have seen are emitting light from one side only...

I do not believe the US Coast Guard approves bulb replacements to an LED for a 2NM Anchor light. When I looked into this, even getting a fully housed LED ANchor Light stating it is US COast Guard approved is not an automatic. I installed an OGM LED Anchor Light but it requires an outlay of cash for the light and then using a mounting bracket to connect it to the mast.

I don't believe the Coast Guard approves light bulbs or navigation lights. That falls under an international yacht construction standard. The CG regulates the requirment for them and can site you for not having one, or in the case of an accident and subsiquent investigation, site you it's lack of visibility was at fault.

There are a number of LED manufacturers that warrant their anchor light LED bulbs to be visible out to 2 miles. I am in the market for one myself, particualrly after I discovered that Aqua Signals LED replacement light is $600. When I get to my home computer I'll email you some points-or-contact.

When I was looking into an LED Anchor Light, I also found a number of manufacturers that advertise they have a 2nm LED Anchor light. I guess if they claim that and it is from a reputable mfr, then that probably will be okay. But I did find a couple of mfrs that not only claimed to have a 2NM LED Anchor Light but also that was certified by the USCG. The OGM LED Anchor light is one of them. Here is a link to their LED light. At the top of the page, there is a link to their news and events. If you click on that and then scroll down...you eventually come to an article that provides some info regarding their USCG certification for the light.

I bought an Aqua signal anchor light made for sailboats from West a few years back. I believe it was about 160 bucks. The manufacturer claims coast guard approval for 2 nm. I'll tell you this, it's the brightest, bluest light in the anchorage and only draws .2 amps.

Dennis, before I climb my mast TWICE, do you or anyone know what bulb is probably up there?

I just bought the OGM anchor light from Larry's link. What a deal. If they had the Red/green bow light in a single unit I would have purchased it as well. Next up is the stern light.

Thanks Larry, good call.

Al,

Regarding the bow light, I also was looking into that and you are right in that I would have wanted to get it as one light rather than a separate green and red. Another manufacturer that does have the red/green LED Bow light as one unit is Lopolight. I was strongly considering getting it.

When I bought my boat the anchor light was not working and since I bit the bullet and decided to rewire the mast and replace the light housings (Anchor and Steaming/Deck light fixtures), I decided to upgrade to the LED for the anchor light so that I would not have to ever change the bulb again...and it only draws a max of .2 amps. So there were two benefits with the replacement.

In regards to the bow light, well there is definitely an amp savings for any evening sails but that tends for me to be mostly only for about 2 hrs after the sun disappears and many times I am either already back into the marina or into the marina only about 1/2 hour after dark. The not having to change the bulb benefit of an LED over the regular bulb is not such an important consideration since I already had a bulb burn out in my stern light and my bow light and the festoon style bulbs and access to it is fairly easy.

But....I still like the Lopolight ! (By the way...it also states USCG approved.)

Did you buy the OGM LED Anchor Light with the Photodiode for turning it off at daybreak ?

If you do buy a LED Bow Light, let us know which one and details of the install. I may get interested in it again !

Al,

One thing about the LED Housing: This is probably true with any new housing that differs from what is on the mast originally - you will have to figure out how to mount it. The OGM website (on the link I had provided) has a detail link for what the base looks like. When I bought mine, I also bought one of the mounting plates they sold but I can't remember which one I bought and I wound up not using it anyway. I had a mechanic work the mast rewiring and what he did was have a mounting plates custom made at some machine shop. If it was easily accessible, which it is not (being on top of the mast), I would take a photo of what it looks like. Anyway...just wanted to prepare you that you may have to spend some time figuring out how to mount it. One of the mounts from OGM may work but not sure.

Larry,

I ordered the light with the photo cell.

I noticed the mounting problem and opted to wait before I ordered anything from OGM. I don't think a mounting solution will be too difficult to come up with.

I'll let everyone know how it goes and report on bow LED lights when/if i find something suitable.
