OK I'm still trying to figure out the best option to get a 250 Water Ballast home. The seller is telling me that a 25' motor boat trailer will work. Can anyone confirm/deny that? Any particular brands or designs that will/won't work?
I'm not a trailer genius, but I know you want your trailer to handle 2 things -
First it has to be capable of the trailer and axles supporting the weight of the boat and crap therein and have for safety the weight of said crap should only be a percentage of the trailer maximum.
Secondly - if the trailer can hold the boat with the keel (stink pots don't have that protrusion) Therefore you are going to need to make sure the bunks on the trailer provide enough clearance for that.
If you meet those two conditions you shouldn't have any problems.
Phil, That sounds like you'll be right at the top of your load limit with a WB. Our WK & trailer total about 5700 lbs before all the crap you normally add. WB are about 1200 lbs lighter I think (WB guys chime in here), which will be pretty close to your 4500 lbs capacity depending on what trailer you end up with.
Phil, You MUST also consider crosswinds and tractor trailers passing you and the effect of such. I know what happens with my WB when that occurs even with the proper trailer. If it were me I'd scrap that deal and look around the NYC or surrounding area. Being without a trailer is a logistics nightmare down the road. Just my two cents worth.
Please see my new post in the Swap Meet about selling our C250 WB in very good condition WITH a trailer. Located near Allentown, PA and I will deliver it within 250 miles for just the cost of the gas.
Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like I might be best just to eat the shipper cost. The seller is going to help me out some with that anyway.
Much as I'd like the option of having the trailer, it's actually more of a headache for me to have one, since I have nowhere to keep it, and I'm not planning to sail anywhere other than my home port.
