I have two batteries and want to charge them with my outboard alternator. Do I have to get an isolator or can I just hook the alternator to both batteries in parallel?
You need to use an isolator. Not only should you charge seperatly your system should be set up so the batteries can opperate independantly of each other. It would be best to check out a book from your library than for me to try and explain it all in detail. Such things as Amp rating of the small generator on the outboard not being able to cope with two batteries and the posability of cooking the system due to overworking it. Protecting one battery from the other in the event one develops a bad cell ect. If you issolate then you may always have one for back up.
