I'm looking to replace my portlights and have been in touch with MARK PLASTICS in Corona CA. (951 735 7705). They say that they have made replacements for Capri 25s that are identical to originals. Have any of you dealt with them?
I have not dealt with them yet. They were reccomended to me by Catalina. I'm looking for someone who has used them. Had some Lexan pieces cut to size that required a hole drilled every inch to secure. Really do not want to do this. AFTER purchaseing them I found out about MARK PLASTICS. I'll sell what I have for $150.00 + shipping.
I was happy with the port lights I put in from Cruising Concepts, but apparently they are not class legal. I think minor items like that which do not truly affect boat performance, should be changed. They certainly improved the boat from a leakage and livability POV.
I spoke to Mark Plastics and all they really offer are sheet plastic windows similiar to the newer Catalina "framless" approach. So I am not aware of any source for the stock replacements. As you suggest, it's amazing (and unfair) that the class association requires parts that no longet exist with no performance impact whatsoever.
You know, we can make class changes by petitioning the association. There is really nothing stopping us. On top of the portlights,I would like to see the option of an assymmetrical spinnaker, a more balanced and deeper rudder, a marginally deeper/heavier keel, and the option of upper shroud straps below deck to aid the structural integrity of the mast configuration. My $.02.
I'm puzzled by the this class portlight thing. My boat, #433 has "frameless" portlights chaulked in place and attached with 4 or 5 screws. I've noted the framed portlights on older boats and just presumed that my boat has an updated factory spec. Am I wrong? Does my boat have aftermarket portlights? Does anyone else have a late model boat with frameless portlights that they know to be from the factory?
