I'm getting the survey this sunday and hope to be posting a bit more over here in the near future. This forum hasn't taken off like I had hoped it would, but it still has a chance.

Here is what the proposed new boat will look like....this is the sistership and mine would be an 82

Very nice! Where will you be taking her? I'll have some stinkpot pictures to show in a couple of days...

BTW, I hope your seller didn't spray that goofy copper paint all over the engine like the sistership!

They didn't, but Universal did when they made them...either that or O'day did.

What a sweet boat! Nice price on that sister ship too. The 5 ft draft is the only thing that I might be a little scared of in my situation.

Let's just say that the sister ships price is way too high in my book and the boat isn't in as good of a condition or have the suit of sails we are getting.

Duane,

Is there a reason you went with an O'Day instead of Catalina? Are you planning more cruising than racing? Is the O'Day a better racer than a Catalina 30? I would have thought that you could get a very nicely appointed mid to late 80's Catalina 30 that is well equipped for cruising and a decent PHRF competitor for about $20,000 or less.

That is a very nice looking sailboat Duane! O Day happens to be one of the few I am familiar with. I am sure she will treat you right.

This past weekend, I spoke with another sailor who has owned an Island Packet 31 for the last 14 years. He now wants to downsize to a smaller O'day.

Nice looking boat Duane. What's the headroom in the cabin?

Al,

Deal of the century would be the main reason. We didn't go looking for a boat, this one sort of found us. And for a lot less than the amount you list above though it is worth more than we are paying. While we do have racing plans for it, she will generally be a family cruiser. Most of the time you will find the four of us racing other people's boats. Oh, and this boat usually cleans up on the Catalina 30's in this neck of the woods - the rating is very similar.

A lot of guys here are loyal to the Catalina Brand. I am not. Guys here also hate Hunter and some put down the bendy toys. I try to look at each for what they are worth - good and bad. I frankly can't see a comparison between this particular boat and any catalina 30 within 10 years either way.

It's enough that I don't need to measure it....but we estimated it to be 6'3" maybe a touch more.

OK, maybe a rookie question but what is a "bendy toy?"

Reminds me of my beloved Gumby but I can't make a connection.
