Anyone own a boat that has the wing conversion kit done? I've seen the tech forum on "Minnie" but was wondering about handling and performance! Thanks!
After several years Mike Leyden still has Minnie. He loves the change in handling and so does his wife.
What he found to be positive after the wing was installed: 1) the boat tracks straighter and requires less steering 2) the boat is less tender (heels less in the puffs)(and sails with less heel generally than before) 3) he doesn't worry about damaging the keel or other parts of the boat when putting Minnie on the trailer for the winter 4) there's a lot less maintenance to worry about. 5) he sails in stronger winds than ever before - lots less time sitting at the dock watching other boats sail in 10 - 20 knots of breeze.
Bill, I'm not trying to take you to task here, but I have to offer another perspective on your latter points:
3) With a couple of 2x6s cut at 45 degress and four short pieces of angle iron I attached keel guides to my trailer which have all but eliminated the "centering" issue when pulling OJ. 4) While there may be less ongoing maintenance with a wing keel, the process of swapping keels involves exponentially more effort than one would ever expend properly maintaining a swing keel for the life of the boat. 5) You will usually see OJ either in her slip or on the hook when winds are below 10 knots. She seems to really perk up and come alive in 15 plus knot winds.
Now, if I could ever get my main sail properly reefed I'd be all set!
OJ, we are still hanging in with ya! We usually keep our boat in year round, unless a hurricane is headed our way! Thanks for the trailer tips! Jason and Fran
I converted my '82 C25 tall rig from swing to wing after the swing cable parted in a storm and broke out the trunk. The boat sank. I salvaged the boat, ordered the wing keel from catalina and had it installed in a boat yard in Key West. The conversion was very good. She points higher than before, seems stiffer and you don't get that cable hum. The only down side I know is if you happen to sail into some shallow water, when the keel hits the mud, you are stuck. I know, I know, stay out of the skinny water. Overall, I am very pleased with the conversion.
