What would be the best sealant / compound for mounting a plastic thru-hull for a depth tranducer? I do not want to pull my boat because of leaks or find my boat sunk.

I'd say Boatlife LifeSeal. Use the "tighten twice" method. But do you really need it to be through the hull? (Is the hole already there? If not, I'd do an in-hull transducer.)

I just did this for two transducers. I use 3M 5200 because I do not intend to remove it. I don't subscribe to the "two tighten" method myself. Both of my thru-hulls are completely dry.

Snug, let set-up then torque to compress the set-up bead.

IMHO: 3M 101 is the very best non-adhesive sealant. Be sure to check compatibility between the sealant and the variety of plastic used in the thru-hull. Sealants can attack and weaken the plastic if they aren't a proper match.

When doing the tighten twice thing, be sure the end with the sealant doesn't move/twist.

I wonder if boatbuilders/yards use the "tighten twice" technique?...I'm thinking not.

I have never used it but once again I think the moisture and humidity levels of an area dictate different levels of concern. I have been using Silicon II for all deck hardware lately and am very happy with it.

My experience with silicone sealer some years ago indicated:

1. It's more fluid than most caulks, and therefore can be more messy and doesn't form the same sort of "gasket" under hardware.

2. The slightest smear becomes almost impossible to remove.

3. Unlike polysulfide, after it sets up, you can't easily zip off the excess that has squeezed out around the edges.

4. Sun turns it brown--especially the aforementioned smears.

5. When you remove something to replace or re-bed it, getting all of the silicone residue off is very difficult.

Just my observations--YMMV. I did use it where my upper shroud chainplates go through the deck, for its flowability and elasticity.

Another vote for Boatlife Life Seal or Boatlife Life-Caulk Sealant. FWIW, I would never use 5200 on a thru hull.
