I haven't been at this long enough to know for sure, but there is a wing keel C25 on eBay, 130116285918 that is advertised as a 1980 but it has the flush mount windows, it's missing the bow running lights in the hull and it has a funny shaped mast. Even the paint, the rubrail and the 'Catalina' logo don't look like 1980. Is it possible that it is a newer boat? His opening bid on what looks like a very rough boat is $250.

Sometimes people amaze me. They couldn't have made this one look worse. Pulling the tarps and hitting her with a power-washer would take what....??? She's not an '88-90--maybe an '87? The HIN will tell the story.

They mention "no bends or dings" on the mast... I suspect the original one has some!

I asked him some questions about this boat and he said that he would get more pictures and the ID numbers when he shows the boat to some people tomorrow. He sounded like he is going to take the first $250 that shows up! I sure wish it was a little closer to Florida! Or perhaps I don't! So, is the mast a replacement?

It looks angular in cross-section--nothing I've seen on a Catalina before. Could be a gem-in-the-rough, or a giant can of worms--I'll bet the latter. (Don't forget the cost of no engine in the equation.)

The boat looks like it suffers more from neglect than abuse which means it may clean up quite nicely.

I just got this email from the fellow selling the boat. He is dead serious about the price.... I simply can't justify going 3000 mles or so, round trip, or I would jump on it. He is also going to be selling a C27. Here is his email.

including listing fees and about 50% of the selling price all go to ebay, it will total over $250, so I'm losing money
again. Hey, maybe I should have donated it to the boy scouts, eh?

Yup. Giving it away. And the interior is clean, not like some of these "gutted" boats that you have to
rebuild. You know, it has the hanging locker and the cabinets & drawers and everything. Somebody will be
stealing this boat. And the sad part is that I also have to sell my Catalina 27 which is near mint, with a mast
I just paid $1600 for. Yup, she'll be listed for $250 as well.

Maybe no one is bidding because they think something is wrong with it. Well, some guy is going to be
really, really happy. My wife said my Catalina 30 with the brand new mast and boom has to be listed for
$250, but that's where I draw the line!!!!

But yes, I will give away the Catalina 25 and the Catalina 27 for $250 each just to get rid of them. And I don't
see any other bidders, so the final bid will most likely be $250. Both boats will just have to be out of here
by the end of June, because we're moving out of Michigan permanently.

Sure wish you could get this boat for $250. You sound like a really nice guy!

Yesterday, I sent him an email asking about the C27 he's putting up for sale. Here's what he wrote...

Don,

Thanks for your questions. The bidding will start at $250 on the Catalina 27. I can't remember
the exact age, but I believe it is about 1978. Includes cushions in good condition, etc. I bought it without a mast or boom or any rigging, so I spent $1600 for a standard rig which cost me another $600 to have shipped to Michigan from Magnolia Texas.
The boat has no trailer, and is sitting in a boat yard in Muskegon, Michigan. I also bought a jib and mainsail and spinnaker for her, so I easily have another two grand in the boat. But I will sell it to the first bidder for $250 with absolutely no reserve. The only thing the boat needs is a new coat of paint where the inboard engine used to be. She has an outboard bracket, but no motor.

Between the C27 needing a new mast/standing rigging and the photo of the C25, I'm thinking he's in the salvage business or maybe getting out of it.

The C-25 in the pictures looks like it was a submerged at one time, probably a storm casualty.

Not enough stands in the right positions... Furler and sail lying in the sand/mud... Different mast (original) from the other pictures (probably broken later when the boat fell over on it)... If this is the same boat (wrong state), the story is muddier than the boat.

Yes if you look at the registration numbers it is the same boat. The boat is also a Katrina victim or from one of the hurricanes? I know of Dr. Jim (not a medical doctor, I asked after his extensive use of the term) because he bought a stern rail from me and was supposed to pick it up on the way back from getting this C25 from Alabama. That was till he realized he had taken a wrong turn and was on the wrong side of TN. Then the minutes ran out on his moms cell phone he had borrowed so he never made it over to pick up the rail. I'm glad I saved the pictures so somebody could see what the interior really looked like. I have other pictures of what it looked like a year or so ago if anybody is interested in bidding and would like to see? I wonder how a C25 tows when you put it on the trailer backwards???

Those Herculon cushions are circa 1983. Identical to the ones on my '83 Catalina. As for the wing keel...well My former swing keeler has a wing now. Maybe that's what's going on here.

I love the HANDLE, "Doctor LOWBRIDGE", explaining perhaps the variety of masts on his boats.

The other day, I emailed the seller a few questions and he promptly responded. Yesterday, I asked him if the boat went through a hurricane...I've yet to get a response!

I asked about getting the hull ID and year from the title and he replied that it is titled as an '88 because that is what someone (gulp! so much for taking the advice of a novice) suggested it might be and that he used the sail number as the rest of the ID. He can't find the ID on the transom.
