Italy (Luna Rossi) and New Zealand will fight it out to go after Alinghi. I think the most exciting part of these races is the 5 minutes before the race starts - check it out!
I have been out of pocket for a while, this is all news to me. It serves us right for not fielding a pure American effort. I was embarrassed that we had Dickson the pouter on the Oracle team. The America's Cup died in San Diego when all remnants of the spirit of the challenge were cast aside in the name of winning. The sailing in Newport may have sucked but it was between gentlemen. Sailing trophies belong in Europe anyway.
From what I know of Ellison, Dickson never had a chance to "resign."
What was it I heard... $270,000,000 down the hole? (Most ever by a wide margin.) And we groan about dropping Leathermen into the drink! Actually, I kinda enjoy hearing about guys like Ellison and Steinbrenner trying to buy their trophies and losing.
I'm betting on NZL in the LV finals. Luna Rosa gets the edge in starts, but NZL cleans up on the course, and goes on to take the AC back to the land where sailing is the national passion. (...and we'll all have to Tivo the 33rd Cup.)
The racing is not named after a country but for the boat that both won the cup then offered it up as a perpetual tropy.
Besides, aren't Mexicans, Argentinians, Canadians and Peruvians Americans too?
Other thoughts:
If we (the USA) were to put together an "all American team' (ALL US TEAM) I think we would have had our clocks cleaned even worse. While I am adamantly opposed to multi national teams, if it is within the rules I think you have to do it to remain competitive.
I wonder how much Paul Cayard was payed to sit out???
I am betting that ETNZ wins just like Dave, however Alignhi will most likely wipe up on either of the two.
TIVO the 33rd Cup? by then it will be pay per view - I don't even get the VS network and only saw 1 bit of 1 race down at the yacht club. Alternatively, by then we might all have internet tv anyway without any dish, cable or antenna.
It shold be renamed the Corporate Cup because that is what it really is.
Use Olympic rules and make all teams field purely national teams. Otherwise this event is headed for the drain. I am proud to be an American and I HOPE Larry Ellison loses.

Try as I might, I just couldn't get a handle on the rules for the 5 minutes before the race, especially the dial-up. I wanted most of the semi races from both competitions, and still didn't get it. Then again, I know jack about racing. Can anyone offer some insight?

I still have a tape of the last race off Freemantle where DC blows a sail on the last leg... Gotta hook up my old VCR again some time! I predict the pre-start is going to be a little more intense tomorrow.
