I have been a little delayed in my launch this year and there is one major thing left to do. I have gone through all the posts regarding transducers and still have some questions. I am looking at getting the Raymarine ST40 Bidata and can't decide which transducer/speed mounting option to get. I am aware of the issues with a transom mount and they don't offer an in-hull option since it also needs to gauge speed.
My questions are: How hard will it be to replace the stock transducer and speed (paddle wheel thingy) on my 82 SR FK? Will the newer parts fit into the old holes? Has anyone else installed the ST40, and how do you like it?
I just replaced my ST30 Bidata with the ST40. It was not hard and we love the new unit. The two through-hulls are located in front of the keel (we are WK) a few inches in front of the fresh water tank. They are side by side, each mounted about 4"-5" from the centerline. I can take a photo if that helps.
The holes for the new transducers were a 1/4" larger than the old ones. How I handled that was to use two hole saws mounted on the bit at the same time. One, the size of the old hole, kept the drill straight and true while the larger one cut the new hole. In other words I nested the smaller hole saw in the larger one and mounted them on the same spindle thing. The nesting makes the smaller one stick out just a bit further than the larger one and to act as a guide. It worked like a champ.
Last year, I swapped to a gps chartplotter fishfinder combo and love it. I have moving charts, water temp, awesome fishfinder/sounder. It also came with a waterspeed sender. That is handy to tell true boatspeed. This all set me back around $500. The depth trasducer is stuck to the inside of the hull with bowl wax. My old sounder is still in the boat to cover the big hole in the bulkhead.
I think the chart-plotter-sounder combos are hard to beat for our boats. And no need to put more holes in the boat!
