Just back from Catalina and Catalina Yachts annual Rendezvouz. Well worth the trip over and back despite lumpy seas and no wind. I'm happy with my o/b but twice the red warning light came on and the engine stalled. I checked the oil level: right up and clean. Restarted and continued motoring over. On the way back, same thing. Restarted and continued motoring back to Long Beach. According to the manual, the problem is either CLOGGED OIL STRAINER or FAULTY OIL PUMP or FAULTY OIL PRESSURE SWITCH. Any guesses as to which? Thanks.

I agree Dan,
Start with the strainer, if that's not it replace the switch if it's not too expensive. If it is quite expensive then I'd just take it in where they can test and replace what's broken. Good luck .......

The strainer will be a real pita to check as the powerhead has to come off to clean it. If it was clogged, you should have the problem all the time. As new as your engine is, I would not suspect that.

My 9.8 has never had this happen but I am on a 25 which has a different motion than the 250. A friend with a 250 has had the oil light come on crossing some particularly large boat wakes.

I think you simply aerated your oil from the motion. If you dont have any other problems with the engine. Light goes out quickly on start, stays out at idle and runs well, I would not worry.

Tom.

I had my mechanic do an overhaul. I filled with too much oil and that was the problem, along with the gucky strainer. So 300 bucks later, problem cured. I was six months overdue on the yearly tune up.

Glad to hear all is well. What kind of gunk did he find on the screen? Was it oil sludge or assembly crap from the manufacturer? I dont want to pull my powerhead to clean a screen that should not be dirty.
