We sailed in our first race a week ago Saturday - an informal, family-oriented 23 miles around Basswood Island, one of the Apostles. Had a great time (even though we came in 3rd from last) - I'll spare you the gory details.
One interesting aspect of the race was the start. They staggered the start; each boat had a unique starting time based on its PHRF rating (they rated ours 216, which seems a bit weird, but ...). Slow boats started first, followed by faster boats. The nice thing about it was that, once all boats were across the starting line, you knew where you stood just by looking around you - a boat behind you really was behind you, and wasn't going to move up in standings on corrected time.
All in all, a good time was had by all - even though the Admiral spent the entire race at the wheel!
