Reading all of the stuff about stupid ideas prompts me to go in the opposite direction.

If you have completed any kind of boat safety, boat captains, six pack or other courses, would you respond with your recommendations.

Personally I would like to upgrade my practical knowledge and past experience with more education.

I'm particularly interested in opportunities here in South Florida, but others would be interested so the location is totally open.

I'll get the ball rolling.
I Purchased the CD and hand book for an American boating course, but never completed the online exam.. Now I'm looking for the book!

Paul.

Paul--is that the American Boat Operator's Course (http://boatingcertificate.com/)? I just took a look, and it's accepted for certification in several states (but not CT).

I too am interested in doing something, perhaps this winter, such as the Six-pack license--I doubt that I have the resume to go much further. Interested in all comments and suggestions...

I used to have a 50 ton six-pack license. It was just a test, long rather than particularly difficult. I understand that there have been some changes in the intervening years, so my experience may no longer have value or in any way be typical. The way it used to work was that you had to certify 360 or 365 days "on the water" experience. Pretty easy to do if you owned your own vessel for some time. The problem came with renewal. The license was--used to be, maybe still is--good for five years. At that time you had to re-certify an additional 365 days on the water during the last five years. You can see the problem. For the initial issuance, you had your entire life to come up with 365 days. For the renewal, only five years. Still, no big deal if you use your boat much. I held mine for ten years, then sold my boat and that was it. I would like to hear an attorney comment on the position of someone who holds a license vs. not holding one when it is unnecessary. If you hold a license without a good, professional reason, I wonder if that might place you in an uneviable position as regards liability in the case of future incidents, e.g., "but Mr. SMith, you are a licensed captain, (actually now it is "Master.") surely you must have known . . ."

Around here, 73 days per year average is a big number! Figuring a five-month season, that's almost four days a week average for the whole season. Maybe you southerners and Californians can make it...

365/5= 73 days a year = 6days a month and we only get out on average 4 days a month in one go even down in sunny fla.. Of course, it would be no problem at all if I quit my day job

Did the guy that trailed from canada to CA/FLA and back qualify ???

Hmmm... Ya, does the boat have to be in the water, or just the skipper on the boat?
