Question: it looks like you have a tall rig (split backstay). Where did you get the bimini, and did you have to modify the mainsail any to get the bimini to fit so nicely?
I just installed a Bimini on my 81 std. rig with split backstay. got it from Catalina Direct-order a catalog from their website if you don't yet have one. I also ordered two cheap Schaefer genoa cars ($18 ea) to bodger up as moveable mounts for the Bimini hardware.
The cars slide along the genoa track and I can shif the bimini fore and aft a couple of feet. No problem with the boom height and top of the bimini-but I've only used it undersail once. Will go again this Sunday! Capn Rick #2458 "Cavale"
Group of teenagers overheard at the base of the Perry Monument:
"Yea dude, I think that Perry dude is just way over rated, ya know dude? I think the dude just got a lucky wind shift or something dude. I'd like to see what the dude can do on a skate board, ya know dude?"
Thanks, Rick, but my question to Don is prompted by the lower boom on a tall rig than on the standard rig. His bimini seems to have lots of clearance, hence my question about sail modification.
Sorry, I haven't responded sooner, but I just spent the last three days at my father's summer cottage on Stag Island in Canada. It is a beautiful island that you can only get to by boat(ferry) and it doesn't have internet accress(it still has a rotary phone, which the kids get a kick out of since it is the only one they've ever seen).
Anyway, thanks for the compliments about the family and boat, I'm proud of both. Concerning the boat/bimini, yes it is a standard rig and the bimini was installed about a week before we left to go on the cruise. It is a vinyl, not sunbrella, bimini that I bought from BoatUS for $139.00. It was originally $180, but it was a discontinued model and reduced to sell. The dimensions, I believe were 6 feet long by 82 inches wide and I mounted it to a pair of old track slides using external eye mounts that I purchased separately. Since it was an off the rack bimini, I had to alter the height by about 10 inches, but that was done simply with my trusting pipe cutter I use for copper plumbing work. Since it is mounted on slides it can be moved both forward and astern. In the pictures, I have it mounted so it's just forward enough not to interfere with the mainsheet. When not in use, I fold it up, put the boot cover on it, and slide it all the way back so it is standing straight up against the backstay(I simply bungee the bimini to the split backstay after disconnecting the snapshackle on the mainsheet)and the height of the folded bimini is over six feet so it is very much out of the way. It wasn't that difficult of a job and the cooling shade it provides on those hot, sunny days is wonderful. If you have any more questions just let me know.
