Went to a dealer and had the keel hardware replaced: new shoulders, pin, bolts, cable fittings and shims from catalina Direct.

He didn't want to put in a bushing.

Long story short. Loud banginging last week-end while anchored. Ordered bushing. Took boat out. Both sets of shims were missing.

Anyone had this problem yet? Saw the tech notes in the forum listing "plexiglas" discs. Is that strong enough? I think Lowell is using masonite or something.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

IMHO: May be a couple things going on here.

I wonder if the shim installation instructions were followed completely. (I'd call Catalina Direct for advice on this.)
The head of my keel has been built up with some layers of epoxy to achieve a 'hand in glove' fit to the keel trunk. It's another alternative to shims.

2) The keel pin fitment to the keel is something that should be proper and snug.

Don't get too discouraged, once you get this sorted out the keel pivot area will be good for many years service.

Wow, would love to have that refurb done too. Do you mean a Catalina dealer? Did they haul you out or did you trailer it to them, and if I may ask, what was the charge?
Thanks!

I would be inclined to take the problem back to the dealer. Why didn't he want to put a bushing in?

It was a Catalina dealer. He thought putting the new shoulders in along with the shims, it would solve the problem.

I delivered the boat and bought the parts. I had him put in the new pin assembly, the shims and the new fitting for the cable. He charged about $425.

I'm waiting to talk to Lowell to see if they ever had the problem before.

Its such a simple system. I can't see how it could be parts failure. Must be installation error.

I called Strictly Sail in Cinti. They said they couldn't think how it COULD stick. The suggested 1/4 x 5/16 machine screw along with the epoxy. They said it was hard to get enough tooth on the fairing material for a bond. The thought using a grinder instead of a sanding disc would help. Lowell knew of no problems.

I'm going with the screw.
