I recently purchased a 2004 Catalina 250 WK in California and had it transported to ID where we live. This week my wife, a friend and I stepped the mast. The mast is not resting directly on the mast step but is suspended and inch or so above the mast step. I have never seen a suspended mast on a boat before and I am very worried that we have not done this correctly. Am I right? If so is there a way to insure that the mast rests on the step when it is raised?

Thanks for any help.

Ken,
Sounds like something's wrong. Does your mast have any kind of "foot" on the bottom? Mine may be different from yours since mine is a '96 tall rig, but here's a picture of what my mast foot looks like: click here.

Thanks for the reply. We do not have anything like this. It is just flat across the bottom.

Ken,
Ours is a '97 WK tall rig, but there should be a black plastic plate on the bottom of the mast that's about an inch thick as I remember. It should not be resting on the pivot bolt at all, it's only there to prevent the mast from moving forward as you step it. I couldn't find any good pictures in our album that shows this, but we're going to the boat tomorrow, and I'll take some. It sounds like the plate is missing somehow on the bottom of your mast.

Maybe someone who's got their boat closer at hand can help you before tomorrow evening, if not, I'll have pictures of what it should look like for you then.

Edit: I just looked at the picture in the link Bubba's post, and that's exactly what I was talking about.

Ken, Seems you've overlooked a little black foot somewhere in your want to go sailing. You may have overlooked it somewhere in the many nooks and crannies ever boat has. Especially an unfamiliar new boat.
Best of luck with your sailing future. And welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the information. This was very helpful. I will look for it in the boat and contact the previous owner to see if he remembers where it is.

Looks like the kind of thing that could fall off when rumbling down the road on the trailer... Note that CD's site only shows that part for the tall rig (no longer in production). A call to Catalina might be in order to get the straight story about the standard rig, which is current.
