The bolts are for securing the leaf braces. I wanted them to appear a bit decorative on the top side where they will be visible but sunken into the surface (under the minwax poly.)
Carriage bolts are expensive...especially if buying in the large sizes and in stainless steel.
When I was working on my solar panel mounting brackets, I bought matls on-line. The prices were okay and more importantly, you can get what you want. The only drawbacks are sometimes you are dealing with a need for one or two items and it is packaged in larger quantities or there is a minimum shipping cost that makes the overall cost expensive. So....you try to think of all the things you may possibly need for this and possibly another project to absorb the shipping cost. But with bolts or other small items....these costs are not all that much anyway...so you bite the bullet and get what you want.
Enjoy your bolts ! Good luck on your project !
By the way...don't you ind it a bear to work on a project at this time of year ? I started a project in the late Spring and now it is on the backburner (too busy sailing) and it will wait till the colder weather sets in.
Sounds like it's going to be a pretty table, looking forward to the pictures.
A good vendor for hardware (and lots of other woodworking & gardening stuff) is Lee Valley. They're one of my favorites, especially for handtools.
Visited Lowe's this morning and found 2" Brass Bolts(#20) Nuts & Washers. The Brass will show through the minwax poly, so I hope they look good.
right now the table is free standing (that'll get you thinking) and the leafs are installed as are the leaf braces. I have to put iron on trim around the edge (veneer) then start the poly process. Pics coming.
