I'm thinking of heading to Montauk, NY from NYC this weekend. I'm thinking about going via the south shore (heading out under the Verazano Narrows Bridge and "taking a left." Any reason why I shouldn't do this? I'll have two other crew members with me. We figure shifts of 4 hours on, 8 hours off and we'll be there by Sunday evening?
Are we crazy? Should we just head up the East River and go through the Long Island Sound like "normal" small sailboat owners?
If your going to do that how bout just sailing around the Island . up one side down the other ? that's a pretty big trip ,the weather looks good though .
I think were going to Port Jeff this weekend . Friday and saturday .
Norwalk has a good visitor dock , but its up river a bit . I think its $2 a foot . Its right next to down town . lots of restaurants movies , there's a west marine with in walking distance .
I have never done it but my friend has competed in races around Long Island. It seems these races are fairly common. The longest run along the south shore without an inlet is Fire Island about 32 miles. Others I have spoken to prefer the ocean to the bays along the south shore. Too shallow in many places, the eastern bays can be tricky. Moriches and Shinnecock Bays can put you aground if you are not careful.
