After 2 months of inactivity (due to my overseas travel) my 2002 Honda 8HP 4 stroke not only did not start at all no matter how much I pulled, but it also sucked out whatever air/fuel was in the fuel line to the point that the primer bulb on the fuel line collapsed and remained collapsed (squashed) as if there was vacuum in the line. This despite opening the gas tank and disconnecting the line from the motor and pushing in the steel ball valve at the end to equalize the pressure.
Anyone has any idea what is going on, and how to get my baby started?
I have never had any problem with the outboard before, no matter how long it sat. Thank you.
Sounds like the vent in the top of the fuel tank is screwed shut, and you've simply pulled a vacuum on it. There should be a small thumbscrew on the top of the filler cap that you can undo to vent the tank.
If you have the Honda fuel line/bulb I believe there is a check valve in the bulb that allows fuel pumped through the bulb to remain in the carburator and fuel line past the bulb. Sounds like it may be stuck, also the bulb must be pointed straight up and down, if you follow the direction of the arrow on the bulb.

The arrow shows the direction of flow. But clearly something is stuck in the line, presumably at the bulb. There is a "check valve" or flapper in one end of the bulb that makes it function. I'd say it's stuck, or it's backward.

Dave, I do not have my Honda 8 owners manual at hand but I believe it says fuel bulb must be positioned straight up/down and the direction of the arrow pointing towards the engine....Nuff said....

I just never did it, nor do I know anyone else who did. (My line went horizontally from the tank to the separater.) I guess they figure gravity will help open or close the flapper.
