I am considering moving my boat to the Olympia area for the summer next year. Can anyone tell me how hard it is to get a 30' slip up there, what it might cost, and what marinas would be a good choice?
Also, bonus question: I also want to keep the boat in the San Juan area on the mainland for a few weeks during the summer. Bellingham is completely full for leased slips, but I wonder if they have guest docks where you can leave a boat for 2 or 3 weeks? Same question for Anacortes (Paul, are you out there?). I asked the harbormaster there once how hard it was to get a guest slip, and the answer was "we nearly always fit everyone in". But does anyone know how hard it would be to lease a slip for a few months in the summer?
Hi Kevin, noticed that no one replied to this post. I've been here in Olympia 10 years, gotten to know the area pretty well. You've got your choice of several marinas, i'll describe as follows:
Swantown: Largest marina, full haul-out facilities (only one left w/ it around here) Shouldn't have trouble getting a slip this time of year, walking distance to downtown. Downside: furthest distance to motor out to the bay, no bar!
West Bay: Most run-down marina, even though they charge about the same as everyone else. Pluses: can sail right out of the marina, and you're in the bay (I like this for day-sails), and a great bar! Very easy to get a slip, even in the summer.
Downtown marinas at Percival Landing (Fiddle Head Marina, and I can't remember the name of the other one) Great downtown locations, usually hard to get a slip, though may not be bad this time of year.
Oly Yacht Club (also at Pericval Landing): This is actually a good deal if you plan to be here for a while, the cheap moorage pays off the club fees pretty quickly. There is a waiting list of about 6 months right now.
The range seems to be around $5.75 to $6.50 a foot, with the larger slips going for more. You should be able to find something nice for $300-$350/mo no problem.
Don't know much about the Bellingham/Anacortes scene.
Kevin, Sorry for the late response. Missed your post somewhere along the way??
Garner pretty much sums it up. Swantown Marina has the most amenities (restrooms, showers, laundry, boat launch) and Swantown Boatworks is in the same area of the bay (haul out facility).
I kept my other boat (c27) downtown Olympia at Martin Marina. It was south of Fiddle Head - in front of Bud Bay Cafe. I liked the marina and location was nice. If you go to a downtown marina, the only facilities are a public bathroom/shower facility at Percival Landing (closes after dark). There are three marinas in the downtown area Fiddle Head, Martin Marina, and the third I am not sure of the name (it is One Tree/Single Tree????).
There is a pumpout station at Percival Landing (downtown) and at Swantown.
I was impressed with Cap Sante Marina in Anacortes. They have a web site and were very friendly. I'm sure they would give you info if you called them. We talked to quite a few people who were mooring up there for the season and driving up from Portland, etc.
Wil, I am not sure now. As I described in another post, I may be BBS and might end up with a boat in the San Juans and my 250 in Portland, at least for a while.
You have 2 boats as well? I thought you sold your 250...?
Just curious, anyone visited the Bellingham YC this past summer? My daughter (through her employer) did the etched glass panels along their viewing deck. Just curious if anyone on the forum has seen them.
My wife wanted the newer boat (no stinky inboard?) and I wanted to be able to trailer the boat. It has taken me some time to learn how the c250 sails, but I am now starting to like it more each time. It is a completley different sail plan from my c27. Sail trim is different and I finally have figured out the combinations (of sail) that work best for the c250.
