I noticed the varnish has worn off my tiller. Now that the boat is out of the water I was thinking of revarnishing it as a winter project. I have redone the teak on the boat but I am guessing the tiller is not teak and it has a different look all together. Any suggestions what to apply to it after I strip the old varnish? Thanks.

HELMSMAN SPAR URETHANE(Clear Semi-gloss) made by MINWAX. It has UV protection, moisture prrotection and is ristantant to extreme temperature changes and it is available at most hardware stores.
I used this stuff 7 years ago, it still looks good and is easy to apply.

If I remember correctly, I used four coats with light sanding between coats and then one more coat a couple of years ago just for giggles.

Make sure the tiller has not started delaminated before you waste your time and money on revarnishing. I always error on buying new vs rehab the old on such a critical piece of equipment.

Also carefully check for rot or damage inside the tiller where the holes for the rudder attachment bolts go through.

My tiller looked perfect from the outside... but undexpectedly broke one day down at rudder bracket. (fortunately while in the slip).

Thanks for those helpful tips. I still have hardly gone near it after hauling out a few days ago. But the tiller will be one of the winter projects.

I just noticed Catalina Direct sells new tillers for only $90. I guess if I see the slightest sign of rot or wear it might be worth my while just buying a new one.

Pyacht sells C25 replacement tillers for $70.00, but you can order one directly from H&L for $60.00.

I'll toss in a second for Helmsman Spar Urethane, four coats using the foam throw-away brushes, with light sanding between each one using steel wool. Gives a really smooth strong finish. Also good for main hatch boards if you make your own.

I bought one at Westmarine for about $60 several years ago when they were having an event sale at the Victoria BC store.
