It is that time of the off season when we start looking forward to the upcoming season, including boat upgrades
One of the items on the list for this year is an upgrade to the mainsheet. We’re considering adding a fine-tune element to the existing gross tune. We’re a race boat and are looking for more control of the mainsail shape. Has anyone done this? Would you recommend it? More importantly, do you have any photos?
I have always had a Harken two speed main sheet system with a double main sheet. It allows for power in upwind mode and speed at mark roundings especially leeward roundings where the boat turns with the main and minimizes drag on the rudder. If you go to the Harken web site and go blocks then to 2 speed systems you will see mine. It is product #332. It has always worked great. Chuck #366
My boat came to me with a two speed mainsheet also. I have not researched the manufacturer. I like the setup with only one exception. When the boat is over powered and I need to dump the main a little the sheet is hard to release from a hiked out position. The mechanism has some adjustments that I may be able to use to solve the problem, but I have not tried that yet.
Chuck. I can see why you would like your Harken set-up.
I think we're more likely to want to modify our existing set-up by adding a fine tune element to the end of the mainsheet. Either we'd connect it to the block, or the boom.
