I am wondering if anyone can provide me with the source of replacement bulbs for the electical panel? We have a 1985 C25 and the Master Panel light bulb is burned out. I have checked on the Catalina Direct website, but it doesn't appear that they have the replacements. It's not such a big deal, but I am always having to look closely at the switch to make sure the system is shut down when we leave the boat.
Mike Grand Lake, OK N.O. Catalina 25 #4849 In my opinion 75% of the earth is water for a reason. That's why I sail.
As you know, I am a big believer in using any chance to upgrade. Newer panels use breakers instead of fuses, toss the panel and enjoy upgrading your boat.
Yeah, that's my long term plan. Right now I am refinishing the handrails, adding the queen sized bed to the cabin, refinishing the rudder, putting in fans in the cabin, building in a stove in the galley and shortening the cabin table so I can just swing it up and lock it to the bulkhead. I am sure one more project on the list wouldn't kill me, but.... We got out only twice last year and I am going to make up for it this year.
And another $150.00 for the boat is something that I have to run by the Admiral.
Yep...me too. I already have one of the handrails about 95% ready and the other to do. I was lucky, if you can call it that, last weekend, it was rather windy and I sat my workmate outside of the garage and let the wind carry the dust away. I still have the stove build in to go and shorten and lower the cabin table. Doesn't look like the season is going to start very soon here anyway. Weekend forecast is for freezing rain and sleet. YUCK.
Sorry Mike - You were asking about lights in the electrical panel! Aren't these 12V bayonet bulbs that many auto parts houses have? I've seen some LED replacements as well.
If you're handy with a soldering iron, you could go to your local Radio Shack store and pick up a blister pack of red or any color LEDs, a pack of 1.2K 1/4W resistors, some thin shrink tubing and you could make some permanent replacement lights for the switch panel.
For 10mA of current through the LEDs, you need a bunch of 1.2K Ohm resistors. These are marked with the following color code stripes: brown, red, orange. Optional fourth stripe could be black, silver or gold. Doesn't matter.
Just note: LEDs are polarized - they will only conduct electricity in one direction. They will block current in the wrong direction. You will probably note the diagram on the back of the blister pack that indicates which lead is positive, and which is negative. There's no danger to the LEDs or the circuit if you accidentally reverse the polarity, except the LED won't light. Resistors are not polarized.
Once you have the resistor wired in series with the LED, place a short piece of shrink tubing over one or both of the LED leads, then heat the tubing with your heat gun or a match to shrink it down tight. This will keep the leads from shorting out.
You can either remove the old bayonet sockets and simply Silicone the LEDs in place, or if you're really good, you can take your old bayonet bulbs, remove the glass, and solder the LEDs and resistors in place on the two leads from the bulbs. You have to be really careful with this approach - you can get cut, burned, or both!
Thanks Bruce, I will be mulling over the options that I have. I do need to pull the burned out bulb and see if I can find a replacement locally. Other than that, I might do as you suggest, or just spring for the new electric panel available on Catalina Direct. Not sure which it will be at the moment. But, with this weekend going to be terrible weather, I am moving ahead with all the other projects. The stove that I ordered came today so I can get the new counter top ready for its install, finish the handrail sanding, shorten the cabin table, and put together the frame supports for the air mattress in the cabin.
So for now, I have plenty to do....Oh almost forgot, I have the rudder in the garage as well. It needs to be sanded and repainted below the water line.
When I needed to replace the threshold on my 89 wing I removed the old one, sent it into the parts department of Catalina. They fabricated me a new one. I think it was about 25 bucks.
Thanks Frank, The threshold is fine and just a little sanding and new coats of cetol will be all that it needs. I redid all of the teak 2 years ago, but hadn't done the hand rails at the time. I have them in the garage at home and one is completely sanded. The next one will be this coming weekend.
