On Randy's (Nautiduck's) prompting I bought the Tie Down Engineering spare tire hub & carrier to use as my 5th wheel arrangement. Tonight was the first night that it wasn't snowing, raining, or hailing since it's shown up, so I installed it (sort of). Had I taken a moment's thought, I would have removed the hated 5th wheel gear first, but at the time I thought I'd be able to get the bolts off, silly me. I lubed up the bolts with one of the rust penetrating sprays recommended in one of the other threads. This worked great...on one set of bolts, the other three, I finally just broke out the reciprocating saw & cut them off, much-much faster. Of course the new hub was right in the way to get the best angle on the rusty bolts, so I had to loosen it up & move it back out of the way. The first one I cut came off with a great POP!, I'm glad I was standing to the side and not in front of it when it came loose. I'd be sporting a nice bruise somewhere if it had tagged me. The second one came pretty much right off, just needed a bit of persuasion with a crowbar to come off the bracket. The last one was a bear, the blade on the saw was getting worn, the angle was bad, plus it was getting dark, but I finally got it off.
Now I need to figure out how to get rid of all the rust stains on the trailer. Any suggestions?
I'm really looking forward to launching with this arrangement instead of the clunky thing I'm trying to unload in the swap meet.
I'll almost certainly need to get a new tire to mount on the new hub, I took a good look at my spare, and it's not looking so hot. I'll take it to the tire store tomorrow or Thursday to get a replacement.

You're quite the salesman!
I use a special "paint" that changes the rust into some other inert substance and turns it black. Available at HD or other hardware stores. Then paint over with a galvanized spray paint.
I'm pretty sure it's never going to sell, so I didn't exactly put lots of work into salesmanship, but you never know. I haven't liked it from the first time we launched with it, and I'd been noodling on how to make a better one for some time before I saw your setup and said "Ah HAH!".
