Looks like Ellison is trying to do to the Swiss what the Aussies tried to do to the US some years back--an ambush challenge. They got ambushed in return by DC's catamaran.
It used to be that the Little Americas Cup was the multi-hull race (C-class cats, a fairly open design that allowed lots of high-tech gimmicks). I used to watch the Patient Lady syndicate spar off Norwalk--one "soft" sail boat and one rigid wing. It looked like both could more than double the wind speed in a flash. I was out there in a 17' Daysailer, and a bit intimidated!
