I need a readout head for a D40 SH depth meter. The readout head is round, about 4 inches dia, with a rectangular window and digital LCD readout of depth. My window has crazed (from the Fl sun and general age) and SH no longer have parts for the unit. Any helpful suggestions welcome too (EG can the window be replaced and how?).

Dave,

Check out this link to an earlier thread. Check out my part of the thread under GaryB about halfway down.

Hello 25 Fans,
I had the same problem, no support from SH. I lucked out and got a used Datamarine Gauge for $20 bucks, that was a 4 inch meter. Check with Datamarine you might get lucky, other wise check Sailorman in Ft Lauderdale, Boaters Exchange in Rockledge, Fl or there is a place in St Augustine that has old electronics, let your fingers do the walking or use the internet for surplus electronics. I saw a used 4 inch depth gauge at the Flea Market at Cape Canaveral a few weeks ago. The transducers should be compatible with the display units, so all you need is the display.

Good Luck,
Jesse Camp

I read that the window can be cleared up if you use toothpaste and a lot of elbow grease to polish it.

Take the window out and get a washcloth, smear a bunch of toothpaste on the window, then rub and rub and rub and rub until you just can't rub any more. Then do the other side.

Supposedly, the crazing and the haze will vanish, and you'll be able to see through the window once again.
