I've posted this in the Swap meet, but I thought I should ask all the knowledgeable folks out there. My Standard Horizon D40 depthmeter works fine but the readout is no longer readable. The small rectangular window, which is prbably acrylic, has crazed from the Fl sun (it's getting to me, too). Anyone out there know if this can be replaced by taking the head apart. How to reseal it? No parts available from SH--they are out of business.
A year or so ago, somebody on this forum told us he polished the glass (I'm guessing it was also acrylic) on a bulkhead compass that had been so badly deteriorated that you couldn't see through it. He said he used Maas metal polish. He didn't describe in detail how he did it, but it's probably a fair guess that he put the polish on a soft cloth and rubbed, and rubbed, and rubbed. He posted a photo of it, and it looked very good.

The price is right too.
Standard Horizon is still in business. I just talked to their service department regarding my ST 40 Depth Sounder. I'll get their number for you when I get home from work.
Unfortunately, Standard Horizon is no longer in the business of making nautical instruments. Nor do they have parts for the instruments they once did make. I called them and they were not helpful--no suggestions, just the repeated mantra "we no longer make or support instruments."
OK, for all you folks out there who need to replace the readout head on your Standard Horizon DS45 depth sounder, here is the solution:
wwwmoorelectronics.com
Their depth sounder is compatible with the DST50 transducer, costs about $250 for the whole setup (check their site for retailers that carry the brand and click through for price quotes). Meanwhile, I plan to remove the present head rom the boat and take it apart to see if I cannot maybe clean the problem away. I'll keep you all posted.
