Just came across this in Ocean Navigator magazine. The website has all of 25 hits on its counter - so this must be fresh. Anyway, a doctor has developed inflatable battens that can be pressurized such as the perfect sailshape can be maintained. I see C250's in the future with onboard 'puters controlling the mainsail pressure and trim while the next generation serves up cocktails.

oh wait - that sounds like my retirement vessel.

When I retire, I'm going to spend a lot of time thinking about battens.

I would love to have an in-mast furling. I have also read about in-boom furling but the reviews are not very good at this time.

I think that at the moment nothing beats the convenience of in-boom furling (with real battens). Too bad they are so expensive. On a 40+ footer I believe the cost was about $15K.

Steve, check out the reviews of in-boom furling in Practical Sailor. If you are not a member, sign up for the 14 day trial.
