Hi,

How easy (or not) is it to get a slip in Toronto? Particularly the Mississauga Marinas. Is there a long multi-year waiting list?

Isn't there some way to check with city offices or emailing them somehow?

I stopped by the Port Credit Marina last fall and there were a lot of open slips. I don't know if that means availability tho.
Looked to be a lot of marinas on Lake ONtario.
Are you moving?

Just tentativly pondering a career opportunity in Toronto, however after calculating the income tax, sales tax and municipal tax increases I'm not sure this would be good at all even through the home are about $100K lower than here.

On the upside summers are longer and with many well designed marina facilities. Just thinking...

Steve - we had a friend recently take his C-25 to the Queen City Yacht Club, and he got in no trouble. other friends of ours are in Oakville (around the bay) and they seem happy enough. I think Toronto has everything from the cheap do it yourself clubs up to the Boulevard Club which is quite hoity-toity.

Housing in the city is very not cheap. I work in Richmond hill and live on Lake Simcoe - a 40 minute drive. There are waitlists on our lake, but the clubs in the city are actively recruiting (at least they were at the boat show this year). If you are considering toronto as a place to work, look at the communities around the city, and consider the GO, VIVA and TTC (Transit) networks for ways into the office. a lot of people who live north of the city drive to Fairview mall and catch the TTC in to town. Free parking, and less grind through traffic.

There is a Catalina Association in Toronto - you may want to contact them as well.

If you come this way be sure to drop in for a pint. I sent you an email, but I'm not sure that you got it. Where is the office you are considering?

Prospector (sorry don't have your first name),

I got your email thank you! As I said, I'm only pondering the idea. The low taxes are hard to beat in Calgary but housing is $450K+. Was looking at the prices for seasonal slips priced from $65 to $88 per foot ($1625-$2200) not bad when comparing with Vancouver.

If I ever come up to the Toronto area, I'll be sure to call you up and drop in for a pint. Thanks again for the info.

Watch the equity buy-ins and ask about club debt before signing on the dotted line though - I know at least one club has drastically lowered membership fees since they will be slapping all their members with a portion of the mortgage on their new clubhouse.

Also one club is being relocated since they are in an Environmental something or other zone. Everyone is wondering just what that means.

Then there are the lakefront condos - everyone is upset about them blocking views of the lake, but some of them have slips as part otf the development. That holds a certain panache.

See you around,
Chris

Toronto Harbor has some awesome clubs - National, Queen City, Island YC etc. I think National and Queen city don't have waiting lists.
As you move West, you'll find some great clubs - Port Credit, Oakville, Mimico, Etobicoke - inexpensive but really nice.
As mentioned, watch for the initiation fees and equity.
Best of Luck!
