Does anybody store a whisker pole on a track vertically on the mast? If so, what type of track, fittings etc. Forespar has a fitting for this purpose, but they are very proud of it at about $250.00+.

Just as an alternative, I really like my solution. I use a couple of SS rings, one fixed at the bow pulpit and one sliding along the lifeline. That allows the pole to be put away at different lengths if I am so inclined.

Dave, I have been storing my whisker pole on a track the mast for years and it I love it. It deployes and stows rapidly and is out of the way when not in use. As far as fittings are concerned, shop around. I'm sure you can find parts to assemble your own arrangement for far less than $250. The hardest thing to find (and the costliest) is probably the sliding ring that will go on the track that the pole hooks into, but even that shouldn't cost more than $75. sorry I don't have photos of my rig handy right now but if you are intersted I can take some next week and post them.
Catalina Direct has a track kit for this application but I don't remember the cost. I installed it several years ago. Installation is simple but there isn't a bracket for securing the pole upright on the mast.
One of our members,John Vining, stores his on the mast track. He cut a slot in a 4" piece of 3" pvc pipe and installed it on his mast to secure the pole. It pole fits snuggly in the pvc pipe and is easy to remove when the pole is needed. I believe he posted a picture in the archives.
Thanks Renzo. Do you happen to know the diameter of the ring? Did you use 1" or 1 1/4" Track? How long is the track? I am concerned about the number of holes to drill and tap, was that a problem? I'm guessing that the fixed mount ring is located close to the bottom of the mast, correct?
Just don't use that Spin pole slide any higher than you can reach easily if it has a spring loaded lock. You'll never get it unlocked. I prefer stanchion storage.

I think I used a 3 or 4 foot track. I drilled and tapped the holes in the mast and used short stainless steel machine screws with the appropriate type of Locktite on the screw threads to attach the track. The number of holes is determined by the length of track which comes with pre-drilled holes at regular intervales along its length. Drilling the holes in the mast is no problem, other than the aluminum is harder than you would think if you've never done it before. Just be sure to use a drill bit stop so that you don't drill too far into the mast and nick a wire or internal haylard. You are correct on the position of the fixed mounting ring.
Frank thanks for fixing the long code strings. Is that something I should be able to do myself? If so, how?

I have recently perminantly disabled the spring lock on my slide. But before that, on the occasions when it has accidentally locked in the up position. I just would climb up on the mast winches to release it. I know it sounds hairy but it only takes a moment and I've done it during races in heavy air and I'm no 22 year old deck monkey.
