mY 78 25 doesent have a roller furler on the jib, my question is if I get one, what modifications do I have to do, or can I use all my existing hardware including the sail
I bought mine (a Harken) from another sailor here on the site. I had to have it cut down because he owns a Catalina Capri. Your sail will need new luff tape or similar in order for it to be fed into the furler itself. The sail that you have can probably have this added, but you need to check with a sail loft. It helps if you have one that is local. Then, the overal dimensions of the sail will need to be checked to see if it will conform to the furler. In my case, on the furler itself, I had to modify the length of the foils so that it would fit my boat. The Capri has a larger jib that the C25 that I have. You may also have to modify the length of the forestay to ensure it meets the furler requirements. This may not be necessary, but I used the stay that came off of the Capri and it was longer. So, whether or not you need to modify it, the stay is probably usable. It might be a good time to put on a new one while your at it. You will need to make sure that the furler hardware is compatible with your current forestay hardware. It probably is, but it's a good time to make sure. I had an anchor roller on mine and I needed to buy a new furler pin (for lack of good memory on the exact name) to snap the furler onto the tang at the tack end. Then you will need furler line hardware to run it back to the cabin. This is not really that expensive, but you will need it. I was lucky and had some parts left over from other changes and was able to use them. And you will need the furling line itself.
I think I covered most of it, but I am sure someone else will add if I have forgotten something.
The short answer is .... probably.
OOPS...almost forgot. You "might" need a pendant. My sail, after being cut had a luff shorter than the length of the foils. Not sure how this happened, but it caused halyard wrap on the furler foils when furling and storing. I added the pendant at the bottom, which helped the sail to be raised about 4 1/2 inches more. This eliminated the halyard wrap and the furle works now. Some will say add the pendant to the top, but I think is is more of a racing thing that anything else. I wanted more space below the foot of the jib.
I added a CDI furler to my boat the first year I owned it. Best thing I've done to the boat by far. I purchased the furler and a 135% furling head sail from Cruising Direct. My old 110% jib was original so it wasn't a difficult decision on the sail. I had to add a toggle to the forestay and the associated blocks for the furling line.
If you purchase just the furler you will need to add luff tape to the sail and, possibly, have your current sail adjusted/cut to fit (sail lofts can advise) If the sail is in less than "good" shape the loft may stronglt advise (read not want to do it)in fear of teh sail failing. You should check out National Sail Supply on the web. They have a package that includes a new sail and CDI furler. They list a 150 head sail with the package but if you call them they will swap a 135 (or any size) and adjust the price accordingly. If you only need a furler, then there are many sources. Iwould start by going to a reputable sail loft to have your head sail "cleaned & checked" then ask if it is suitible for use on a furler and what modifications need to be made at what cost. Then decide if you need a furler or new sail and furler.
