I'm looking into my application for my MMSI number now that I have my GPS talking to my VHF enabling DSC. Normally I would just complete the BoatUS application, but they say that if we're going to be cruising in international waters (EG: BC Canada) that we should apply for our MMSI number through the FCC, otherwise our data won't be shared with the international search and rescue networks.

Has anyone dealt with this? I know that the USCG & the Canadian Coast Guard work with each other along the border in the Puget Sound, but I'd hate to get in trouble up in the Strait of Georgia or something, press the DSC button & have nothing happen.

If you are going to be operating your VHF in Canadian or Mexican waters you'll need to get an FCC license for the boat and an operator's license.

Here's more info. http://allaboutboats.blogspot.com/2006/05/fcc-vhf-license-required-for-cruising.html
