A co-worker is interested in buying a sailboat. he now has started looking. he came across a 1983 Glocester 20 (believe centerboard-keel) on Craig's List for ~ $2700 with a trailer (he indicates looks in very good condition), fairly new sails and a motor that so far the previous owner could not start (but is working on it ?). The PO has not used it for 3 years. It's on the side of his house. I could not find a photo of it but my friend said that it looks in fairly good condition. I will not be able to go see it...it's located some distance away.
Anyway, prior to him finding this boat, I told him about the merits of perhaps going with a boat that has an active forum for support especially because he has limited sailing experience and believe he has not owned a sailboat. Also, I cannot find much info on this boat on the web...and so he may be on his own regarding parts support or getting good advice when issues come up.
Besides the condition of the boat which I have not seen with my own eyes, what does anyone know about this sailboat ? On one hand, maybe not having such a mainstream boat as a Catalina, ODay, etc it may have other attributes...maybe character ? for not many around ?
What would you advise ? I would say not jump into this unless he has had an opportunity to at least see other sailboats to compare what he can get for his money and also the experience gained from just searching. I also recommended he take a look at the Wash sailing marina's bulletin board because they oftentimes have boats for sale and it is close by as well making it easy to review prospective boats - I could also take a look !
You might try checking trailersailer.com They have a forum for Gloucester sailboats. It doesn't appear to be very active, but they might have an archive with some general info about the boat.
I've seen the Gloucester 19--a very pretty, classic daysailor... But you make a good point--there's some value to buying a boat that people know, and that value is particularly evident when you try to sell her. Every area has some boats that are popular there--it's not a bad idea to buy one of them (unless you're quite knowledgeable and self-sufficient, and/or plan to keep her forever).
A friend had a 23, very nice, there is a 20 in our yard, doesn't launch. They were a brand that was brought out to capitalize on the sailing boom of the late 70's early 80's but missed it. To my eye they are well made sturdy little boats.
I just received an EMail from my co-worker friend. He put a deposit on the Gloucester 20. It apparently is on the Wash DC Craig List if you search on Gloucester. Looks pretty clean and decent looking. I have not personally inspected it but from the photos it has a nice presentation and w/trailer it was advertised for $2600. Not sure if he offered him less for it. I'll probably get more details on Monday when I see him at work. (He may keep it at my marina since there are slips available and it is convenient to work and then going home from there.)
