I would like to change out our light fixtures in our 1987 Cat 25'. I purchased a West Marine 5" round, but it does not fit flush with the galley head liner. Has anyone found a better product that fits flush ? Type or brand. Thank you as always for the informative information to the class.
I am on a mooring ball, so I do not have shore power. The biggest challenge for me is how to keep my batteries charged so that I have lights and entertainment every weekend when I am gunkholing and cruising. I have a solar panel and a Honda Outboard with a good alternator - these combine to keep my batteries charged. The key to my power consumption budget is that I have standardized on AA rechargable batteries. These batteries can be charged from my inverter. Although most often I bring charged batteries with me. I use these puck lights throughout the cabin and can light my cabin effectively. On a single charge, each puck light will operate about 40 hours - on a one week cruise last summer, none of them went dim or needed to be recharged. I also have a LED mast light that runs on AA's as well as my IPOD sound dock, flashlights, radio, Starfinder and GPS. The additonal benefits of the puck lights are they do not have to be wired, and no holes need to be cut. They can be mounted with screws or with doublesided tape. I think these are one of the best innovations for boats and RVers.
I have 3 puck lights on my C-25 to supplement the original lights, one in the head directly over the porta-pottie, one in the upper left narrow recessed space over the galley formed by the cockpit coaming, and one on the shelf inside at the rear of the boat. They don't light up the cabin as brightly, i.e. less glare, which helps at anchorage or when I'm driving at night. I may add a few more next time they go on sale. I also found, at Big Lots, a 3-pack of small LED lights shaped like a lantern. They use 4 AA batteries. I used one for an anchor/steaming light this past Memorial Weekend. Forgot to turn it off after we docked, and two days later, it was still burning.
