On my 78 the engine mount is really low on the transom which puts the whole engine pretty low. Reaching out that far to get at the shifter is a real pain. Short of buying a remote engine control setup (which I think are way over priced for what they are), does anyone have a better i.e. cheaper option for extending the shifter lever?

A friend of mine used a small piece of PVC pipe (1/2" or 3/4") clamped onto the side mounted shift lever to extended the shift lever upwards about a foot or so.
sound like a good idea... find the PVC tube that would fit over the handle, make 2 saw-cut at 90deg in the tube lenght, and put a clamping collar. The saw-cut will give flexibility at the end for clamping.
That's exactly what my friend did. He first drilled two 1/4" holes on each side of the pipe about 2" from the end, then cut a 1/4" slot from the end to the outside diameter of the holes to allow the clamp end of the pipe to close around the shift lever. I'd imagine if you wanted, you could throw in a 45 degree elbow to slant it towrds the transom.
