I'm considering changing my halyards. The mast is up. I'm thinking to attach a cable or wire (small diameter) to the end of the old halyard and run along the new halyard then duct or electrical tape over that and the butt joint where the old and new will meet. Has anyone had the opportunity to do this?
Thanks in advance

It can work. Might be better to melt or whip the ends together with whipping twine , and then lightly tape it up before actually doing it. Too much tape bulk has a tendacy to either jam in the sheeve, or override it.
I've replaced all the running rigging on our boat. It is easy. Cut the shackle end off the old halyard at the mast. Sew the bitter end of the new halyard to the shackle end of the old one with waxed whipping twine(dental floss will work)and a big needle, at the mast, butt end to butt end. Wrap the joint tightly a few inches each way with black vinyl tape(electrical tape) to fair the joint. Pull it up the mast, over the top, back out thru bottom and the deck organizer. Be sure to secure the shackle end of the new halyard so you don't pull it up the mast. Nothing to it!
