This night race is the most exciting event we have put Iris into this summer. I'm getting pretty pumped about it already. Certainly it doesn't compare to some of the other stories I've read about other folks racing experiences on here, but still There is a load of excitement going into this.

Here is why:

We are within reach of 3rd place if we pull off 2 good finishes. We must Beat "I am Canadian" on this race if we are going to hold our spot. Our placing going into this is here: http://www.byc.on.ca/results/2008/lsis/lsis.html

On a previous race we were right on Canadian's tail crossing the finish, but were penalized on PHRF. I am sure we can catch him this time since the race is much longer. Of course, in our last race he beat us by 15 minutes, but that was before I figured out the foot line on our main, and what our tacking angles were.

I have good crew. So far every race has been just my daughter and I, or me and one other adult. This time I have another experienced sailor, the guy who has been crewing with me on the club races, and a newbie. Having lots of adults on board means good things (I hope). Also everyone is dedicated enough that they are all coming out to our club race to get familiar with each other before the race, I'm hoping this will be a big help. I am also nervous that 4 adults will be too much crew on the race.

The wind looks about right for us. Right now the forecast is for wind in the 15 km/h range, which is where we seem to do best. Lighter is better against our home fleet, and I'm hoping the same will hold true here.

The allure of trying something new. Never done night racing, that adds a level of excitement for me.

The batteries are all my focus right now, that and stripping down the boat of the non-essentials before race day. I'd also like to rig a cunningham, but would have no idea how to use it - so far we've been OK without one, so I think I'll just let it be. Here's hoping things go well.

Any tips are welcome!

The Cunningham (aka Smart Pig) is used to tension the luff of the mainsail, which will move the draft forward. Use this when you start to get overpowered, just enough to take the wrinkles out of the main luff.

Good luck and sail fast!
