For me, I find that 4 adts is about all I want on board when sailing. If they sit in the cockpit, it gets too crowded as DavidP indicates. And most don't want to just sit in the cabin. I have had them sit on the bow deck, but they have to be alert when we tack.
Mike, I usually have 2 or 3 but if 4, 2 sit in the catbird seats. Most prefer to sit there anyway. But now way 4 in cockpit unless the 2 in forward position are will to work the sheets, etc. Steve A
I think this primarily relates to commercial boats carrying significant numbers of passengers... aimed at preventing the kind of capsizes we've read about in the Med, Far East, and Lake Champlain. I can say that looking at the tourist excursion boats running here in Mystic, the "size" of the average passenger is not what it was 10-20 years ago.
piseas... I wish I had catbird seats. Ours is an 85 Standard Rig with just single rail lifelines and no catbird seats. It would be great to have a pair as I like sitting in them as well.
Somebody managed to sink a C25 on lake dillon in Colorado last year, he had 25 people on board (no one was hurt) I think he got charged with something...
Usually, when the admiral and I have guests on board, it's only another couple, sometimes 3 people. The only times I've had a total of 6 is during Learners At The Helm (LATH) on Tuesdays after work. LATH is our club's outreach effort to introduce people to sailing and, hopefully, gain new members into the club. It's been very successful. In 2-3 years, our club membership has grown from just over 100 to 188 at last count. That's a huge boost to the club's cash flow! Two who have sailed with me this summer have already bought a boat.
