If any of you PNW sailors are in the waters near the San Juans the next couple of weeks give the Nauti Duck a call on channel 16. We depart from Eugene on Sunday for the drive to Anacortes and then two weeks in the Canadian Gulf Islands. Our plan is to be flexible but we do have these destinations in mind:

Start and end the trip at Cap Sante Marina

Spend a couple of nights at the jewel of the San Juans - Sucia Island

The crew is looking for some luxury at Poet's Cove on South Pender Island

Jim Sweet highly recommended spending time at Ganges on Salt Spring Island

I am looking forward to a couple of nights at Sydney on Vancouver Island

Then we'll cruise to the backside of Butchart's Garden and moor at Butchart Cove

People keep saying we have to go to Montague Harbor

And, of course, we always hope to see orcas which alluded us last year!!

We pulled the boat yesterday and can now say the Nauti Duck Mast-A-Matic gin pole worked like a charm. This trip we will have the full crew as our 24 year old daughter is joining us for the whole trip. Now we are hoping for good weather but my new foul weather gear arrives Thursday just in case!!

We're bringing a laptop but probably wont be posting much until our return. I hope you all have a wonderful Labor Day weekend - especially you Canadians!

We cannot direct the winds but we can adjust our sails.

Randy: We'll try our best to meet up with you somewhere around the Sucia portion of your trip... Although "retired", we seem to have more appointments, schedules and things to keep us off the water than we believe possible.

BTW there are two other C250 (Peter & Peter), in the Vancouver area who perhaps may wish to meet up with you as well...

Just across from Sidney is Sidney Spit...many buoys or anchor. Row ashore and walk island along many paths, its truly a beautiful spot. A small shuttle makes runs to Sidney and back. Also, another favorite of ours is Naniamo via Dodds Narrows. It has a great marina and new boardwalk along waterway. And across from Naniamo is Newcastle Is., a Provincial Marine Park offering dockage for small boats. The park is wonderful with beaches and views of the Georga Straits. We can't make trip this year but hope to be in waters next year...have a blast!...Dave

Dave, Naniamo is probably too far North for this trip but Sydney Spit sounds good. Thanks for the tip!

Henk, we plan to depart Anacortes on Tuesday 9/2 and head to Sucia for two nights. Probably Echo Bay. If weather is bad, though, we may go straight to a marina like Poet's Cove to appease the crew.

Randy,

Could you explain what information your have used to plan your cruise? I'd love to sail there someday. Are there cruising guides or websites that are best?

Hope you have clear weather!

JohnP,
The San Juans are probably my favorite dream as well. It's to bad I don't have a trailer and I'm 3000 miles away. Have fun Randy, and keep us folks who can only dream in mind.

John, I use the "Bible" of PNW cruising, the Waggoner's Guide which comes out with a new version each year.

Note, it is the book on the right hand side of the page a bit down, not the Secret Coast guide which is a new one for them. The annual guide covers the San Juans and much more. It is a great reference, has illustrations of all the marinas, describes how to get into tricky spots (rocks, etc) and just has a wealth of information. It is the primary tool we use to plan our trips.

We definitely consider ourselves very lucky to have this cruising ground just 350 miles up I-5.

Well we're back. Had an absolutely great cruise. Weather was clear blue skies and 70's every day. This is the second year in a row that we got exceptional weather the first two weeks of September.

Loved being in Canada. It was cool to fly the Q flag and then go through Customs and then fly the Canadian flag. USA Customs is WAY more serious. Took about 150 photos so I need to sort through and then post some on the cruising forum.

Did more sailing than last year and even when we motored we had the main up. Our daughter joined us this year and I can say that three people on a C250 is tight but can be done with proper organization.

Spent the last night at a Washington State Marine Park named Spencer's Spit on Lopez Island. We all agreed it was the most beautiful place we visited. Sitting out in the cockpit on a warm night and watching the ferries go by in the distance was magical.

Now I'm cleaning out the boat and getting it ready to be tarped for the winter.

Oh, and the Oregon Ducks are 3-0 and ranked 12th!!

Randy, great to hear such a nice trip. Are you going to post pics here or on cruising forum?
