There was a thread about portable fridges a while back that talked about Waeco fridges. I've been thinking about getting one pretty much since we bought SL, and now the opportunity has presented itself. About a week ago our regular fridge decided to give up the ghost. Theoretically it's under warranty, but they can't get here to repair it till next Thursday. I can hardly believe there's only one Whirlpool repairman in the entire PNW, but Whirlpool won't cover the repair unless we have it done by this particular company.
Needless to say going a couple of weeks w/o refrigeration is tough to do, especially since we'd just stocked up on meat the day before the fridge went TU. We've been on the dry ice & 5-day cooler economy since then, until yesterday. A friend of ours recently won an auction for some restaurant gear for a bar he's buying, and was able to find a chest freezer for us to use. So now, it's the tyranny of making our own ice instead of buying dry ice (at roughly $20/trip every couple of days) to keep our two 5-day coolers stocked with ice.
We called our insurance company because they cover loss of refrigeration and they're reimbursing us $300 for the stuff we've already lost and the cost of ice/dry ice to try to save what we've got left. Our original idea was to buy another dorm fridge to supplement our coolers & other dorm fridge, but then I got to thinking, with our reimbursement check we could pay for about 1/2 of a new Waeco fridge which we could use during this crisis, but then be able to use for the boat, camping, etc. I started looking around for the best price I could find, which seemed to be hovering around $600 plus taxes and/or shipping. I figured I'd find the best price I could, then beat up WM to match the price so I'd have their return guarantee to work with should I need it.
Then I found a company on Ebay selling them for $545 + $70 shipping. This seemed like a pretty good price, but I noticed that they had a "make best offer" button which I'd never seen before. I decided to offer them $495 & see what happened. I just got the confirmation back from them, and our new Waeco CF-40 will be shipped shortly for a total of $565. If you're interested, here's the link to their auction, they've got around 100 of them for sale at this price, and maybe you can get a better price than I did, we know they'll take at least $495. Good luck:
