In preparation to rebed some of our boats windows, I searched the archives and couldnt find anything useful. So, we thought that you just put marine sealant in between the window and the frame and again in between the frame and the bulkhead. Simple, right? Well, not really. After sealing the first window to the frame we realized that it was not a snug fit with the hole in the bulkhead (we're talking an inch here). So we're back to plywood and a tarp. My question is, who has used the kit from CD, and how well did it work for you? It looks as if the vinyl glazing (#11 on image below) will increase the width and height of the entire window/frame assembly to shorten the gap, and the included silicone sealant seals the frame to the bulkhead. Although I am not sure.

Also, only two of our windows have already been removed. The others dont leak and ye dont want to rebed those too. Can the remainder of the kit be saved for a later date that which we need it?

I re-sealed my windows using the kit from CD. It worked perfectly. You must read the instructions carefully and follow them to the last detail. The image that you're referring to in #11 is the rubber gasket supplied with the kit. It doesn't change size of the window/frame assembly

It's critical that you put a bead of sealant in the channel of that rubber gasket. If you don't your windows will leak.. Everything that you need is supplied in the kit. It took me the whole day. It will get messy if you don't take your time.

The short answer is yes, you can save the unused elements , provided you seal them thoroughly. In addition to the rubber gasket, the kit includes the two types of adhesives; silicon for the glass to gasket seal and caulking for the frame to the boat seal. As Pete said, you really need to follow the instructions carefully.

Pete, is that a bead of silicon in between the glass and the gasket, or the gasket and the frame, or both? If the gasket doesnt add about 1/3 inch to all sides of the frame assembly, than Im not sure itll even work.

The silicon bead is applied to both sides of the window gasket. If You are resealing stock Catalina aluminum framed windows this kit will work. My windows are sealed 100%...

The gasket supplied with the kit is almost identical to the stock factory window gaskets.

Try doing one window first if you're not sure about attempting this project, don't remove all of the window at once. Practice with one window first and then the rest will be easy.

More important, make sure that you apply a generous amount of caulking as shown in figure 4. That bead must be large

I recently resealed all of my windows on my 78 Cat 25 using the kit from Catalina Direct. Very good kit. Good instructions and all the necessary sealant supplied with the necessary gaskets. I installed them in the boat using the supplied 3M 4200 sealant between the aluminum extrusion and the cabin sides. I thought I did a really good job but sure enough with the first hard rain, I had a leak coming through one of the newly installed windows.
I found that you need to make sure that you apply enough sealant between the flange and the cabin sides close enough out to the edge of the flange so that it clearly squeezes out all around the edge (obviously you tape everything off first or you will have a BIG mess). I touched up the sealant around the window that was leaking and no more problems.

Was at the boat earlier, the gap isnt as big as I thought, but it is there. Now hos do I get the window off the frame, its bedded with 4200.

Are you refering to fig.4

The aluminum frame is bedded to the window opening( bulk head) with factory sealant. I used a 4" steel putty knife to cut through the factory sealant fig.4 from the outside of the boat.

To remove the glass from the frame, remove the bracket shown in fig.6 the frame splits and then you will have access to the glass

If you haven't already you will need to purchase a new window gasket either from CD or from your local glass repair shop. It is necessary to add a generous bead of silicon on both sides of the gasket... if you don't your windows will leak... How do I know? I made that mistake the first time.

The gap that you mentioned in you original post is not the source of leakage. The source of leaks occur at the frame(fig.4) and at the window gasket(fig.11). The window frame covers the gap from the outside, I wouldn't waste 4200 trying to fill that gap.

According to CD... they told me that this window design was flawed and many new boats left the factory with leaky windows in the 80's.

I would highly recommend getting the kit from CD if your windows are leaking. It contains everything you need to re-bed your windows properly... and if you run into a problem they will help you..
