I am looking at a 1977 Catalina 25, as an upgrade from my Catalina 22. It is a swing keel model and I am wondering what kind of headroom will I have with the pop-top DOWN. This is an important issue, as my current 6ft frame gets mighty sore from stooping constantly in the Catalina 22.
This boat also has a marine reverse cycle ac/heat 9000BTU unit. How usefull is this at dockside. We are in HOT Humid central Texas.
I am 5'7" and can stand almost completely upright inside our 1984 model. Actually, I can under the sliding hatch itself. In the 2 years we have owned her, I have yet to raise the pop-top even once. The interior is huge compared to the C-22, especially with the traditional interior. If you plan to do a lot of overnighting, the dinette interior has its advantages because, with a bridge and cushion covering the walkway, the dinette can be transformed into a big bed. You'll like having the A/C. several who post here regularly have added that to their boat.
Lane, I agree you will have more room than the C22, (I also did same upgrade) but you should scope it out for yourself first. I think you will appreciate the pop-top. When at my slip or anchored, I always have mine up and love the snap cover that it came with. I am not your height but have still bumped my head with the pop-top down. But you have to ask yourself, how many times you gonna go down below while sailing. RE the A/C, I am sure you will love it. But again, thats where have a pop-top and cover will keep the cool in. I assume you are not buying sight unseen! Steve A
Lane, I am 6'1" and have a '78 C25 without the pop-top so I can speak with some authority here. The only place I can stand erect is when the sliding top is pushed back and I am standing next to the stairs. I have to duck to move anywhere else. If you don't "pop the top", be prepared to stoop.
My driver.s license says I am 5' 11", but I am probably shorter now that I have passed 60. I cannot stand anywhere without tilting my head with the top down. It takes about 5 minutes for two of us to raise the top and put on the cover, so it always goes up in the marina. I love it.
