West Marine sells a Feit brand compact fluorescent bulb with a standard edison screw base. It draws about 1.1 Amp at 12V. A 13W CFL provides as much light as a standard 60W 120V incandescnt lamp!
Conceivably, you could buy a standard wall sconce fixture, wire it up to the panel, screw in the bulb, and you'd actually be able to read in the cabin.
One problem : it costs $18 bucks! I can get standard CFLs at my local dept store for $2 each, so I'm a little resistant about shelling out 9 times as much. Obviously, the 12 volter is a special issue made in much smaller quantities, but this is ridiculous.
I've checked several RV equipment and solar power websites, but have not found this lamp available from any other source. Has anybody got any suggestions on where I might find it?
I also checked with the manufacturer and are more than willing to sell me a few gross of the bulbs. I don't think I will ever need or use that many.
It's a cool idea, but I guess I have to bite the bullet . . . .
