West Marine sells a Feit brand compact fluorescent bulb with a standard edison screw base. It draws about 1.1 Amp at 12V. A 13W CFL provides as much light as a standard 60W 120V incandescnt lamp!

Conceivably, you could buy a standard wall sconce fixture, wire it up to the panel, screw in the bulb, and you'd actually be able to read in the cabin.

See the link: http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/producte/10001/-1/10001/66519/377%20710/0/12v%20bulb/Primary%20Search/mode%20matchallpartial/0/0?N=377%20710& Ne=0& Ntt=12v%20bulb& Ntk=Primary%20Search& Ntx=mode%20matchallpartial& Nao=0& Ns=0& keyword=12v%20bulb& isLTokenURL=true& storeNum=5002& subdeptNum=9& classNum=14182 WM 12V CFL

One problem : it costs $18 bucks! I can get standard CFLs at my local dept store for $2 each, so I'm a little resistant about shelling out 9 times as much. Obviously, the 12 volter is a special issue made in much smaller quantities, but this is ridiculous.

I've checked several RV equipment and solar power websites, but have not found this lamp available from any other source. Has anybody got any suggestions on where I might find it?

I also checked with the manufacturer and are more than willing to sell me a few gross of the bulbs. I don't think I will ever need or use that many.

It's a cool idea, but I guess I have to bite the bullet . . . .

Sean, they have loads of 12v stuff, but finding lamps (bulbs get planted in the ground ) is not easy.

I have asked my son to give me some info on this (it's in his field... the lamps, not the bulbs

Sean --
This is a great resource, thanks.
I checked the site for the brand name FEIT. Looks like they don't carry that brand.

Next time I'm in the WM store I'm going to check out the manufacturer's part number.

Meanwhile I might go ahead and purchase one and see whether Paul can come up with an alternate supplier.

A Brit is telling us the correct term for something; these are the people who have no idea what to call the parts of a car or tools. Spanner... really! Heaven only knows what they call a cockpit!

I finally found two locations where you can get the 12V CFL bulbs for less than $18.

http://www.nolico.com/saveenergy/12_volt_marine_cfl.htm for about $13.78
and
http://www.blacklight.com/items/BPESL13TMAR12V for about $12.50

Problem is, season is almost over in CT. I guess I'll have to wait until next spring to use it. Boo Hoo.
