Sometime back I saw a picture of a home made backing plate for the bow eye. However, I can not find it by searching. Does anyone remember this and can tell me where to look??

I don't remember seeing a post about homemade bow eye backing plates. Have you checked with Catalina Direct? I bought one from them a few years ago for our C22.

I used a maple broom handle from Home Depot.

Frank:

Do you think a piece of 2" PVC pipe would do as well??

No. It would instantly crush.

I used a chunk of oak to replace my bow eye backing plate. You might want to bed whatever backing you use in epoxy putty to better spread out the load.

I found a piece of 1 1/2 inch UHMW plastic, the same stuff cutting boards are made. It will never rot and I bedded it in epoxy. Do it once.

Here's what I did.

After removing the existing piece of rotten wood, here is what was left.

At the factory, the liner was sort of removed by drilling several random holes that makes no sense at all. I cut the liner out so the new block would fit against the hull, not the liner.

I shaped a piece of teak to match the curvature of the hull. You can see the old rotted piece next to the new piece.

I glued the new piece to the hull with a dollop of thickened epoxy.

Paul,
The boat is still on the trailer. It's just out of view in that photo. IK'll never get it done.
John,
Thanks for noticing the workbench. I love that bench. The top is 4" thick, 36" wide and 8' long. It's heavier than a dead horse. The base is oak with dovetailed drawers. The legs are 3" square. The bottom two drawers were not completed in this photo.
